Buying a Generator in Nigeria without Knowing This May Cost You More

Making an effort to research on a generator set to buy before going to the market is really commendable.

And at least, I believe you wouldn’t make the same mistake I made when I got my first power generator set.

I made the same mistake almost everyone make with generators – buying one that was popular.

Electric generators are not like everything else where popularity can be used to determine which is best for your needs. With Generators, you’ll need to put your power needs and expectations into consideration before going to the market.

Different Generators have different power supply capabilities, fuel requirements, start mode and even optimum weather conditions! You have to take all these into consideration so you don’t end up frustrated with a power set far below your needs and expectations like I did with my first power generator.

What to Look For

There are lots of generator brands and sizes in the market.

Finding one that’s ideal for your needs can be almost as hard as finding a pin in a haystack. But that’s when you don’t know what you’re looking for. Knowing what you’re looking for makes everything easier.

So, what do you look for?

Well, when it comes to buying the right generator for your needs, it mostly boils down to your total power needs and type of fuel. Have an idea of these two and everything else will fall into place.

I’ll guide you on how to buy the best generators for your needs using the two criteria (power needs & fuel type).

And to make everything easier for you – I’ve given a short review of some of the best generators on the market. You can go for any of the listed ones with confidence once they fit your power needs.

But first off, let’s start with what to consider before buying a generator.

How To Determine Your Power Needs

For this, you’ll have to go for a little walk around your home.

Most electronic appliances come with power rating often displayed at the back or bottom of the item. The rating is in different format V, Hz, and W.

You’ll often find something like 220-240v ~50Hz 1500-1800w. All your electronic appliances carry this rating.

Get a list of all electronics you have in the home on a sheet of paper with two headings; item and power. Under the item header, list all your appliances like TV, refrigerator, and DVD player. Under the power, you’ll only record the figure given for the W.

From the above example (I actually got that from my electric iron), I’ll record only 1800W. Always use the highest if two values are given.
If you’ve done this, you should have something like this…

Item Power
Television 140W
Laptop 60W
Refrigerator 200W
Iron 1800W
Total 2200W

From the above total, I know my power requirements are around 2200W. So, getting any generator with a power output less than that is not an option.

On generators, you’ll find the rating in KVA. This means 2200W will be written as 2.2KVA.

It is recommended that you get a generator that is above your power needs if you want one that will last longer.

The above step is the most important step in this review. Ensure you follow it to the letter if you want to end up with a power set that will take care of your needs without breaking down within a few years.

I believe you’re good to go with this information.

  • Thanks for this review. I think I’ll go for that elepaq.

Please do we have to include power consumption for bulbs too?

    • Hi Josh,

It depends on how small your fridge is. Most of the small Tiger generators have a power rating ranging from 650VA to 1KVA.

If your fridge has a power rating that’s far below the power rating of the generator, then the generator will be enough.

But if your fridge’s power is higher, the generator won’t be enough.

  • I think the small tiger generator is okay for me , considering am a student and a bachelor living in a one room self con, so that’s OK It will take my laptop, TV , and mini fridge

  • Johnson

    Hey,

Please I need a noiseless/sound-proof generator that’s N200,000 or less. Can you give me the info on where to purchase it?

    Thank you.

  • Steven Greene

It is however true that different generator is used for different purposes. They require fuel to run and they may be different watts’ variant and each watt is responsible to run certain different appliances. Check these buy and sell used generators out at stores.
