Flatbed
This is the most common type of industrial sewing machine and, in fact, it resembles the traditional sewing machines in that both the needle and the arm extend to the base of the machine. This type of sewing machine is usually used to sew flat pieces of fabrics together.
-
Cylinder-Bed
This type of industrial sewing machine presents a narrow, horizontal column contrary to what is observed in the flatbed. Hence, it allows for fabrics to pass around and below the column. Normally, its diameter usually varies between 5cm to 16cm. Tailors that sew cylindrical pieces like cuffs usually employ the cylinder-bed sewing machine. However, it can also be used to sew bulky items like saddles and shoes.
-
Post-Bed
Features of this type of industrial sewing machines include bobbins, feed dogs and/or loppers in a vertical column that usually rises above the flat base of the machine. The height of the column can range from 10cm to 45cm. A Post-Bed sewing machine is usually employed in applications that make access to the sewing area difficult, such as attaching emblems, boot making, and gloves making.
-
Off-The-Arm
This is the least common type of industrial sewing machine and it requires users to feed material along the axis of a horizontal column. It is useful for applications such as sleeve and shoulder seams but its design limits the length of the seam sewn to the length of the column.
Things to Consider When Buying Your Industrial Sewing Machine
After you must have concluded on the type of sewing machine that best fits your needs, the next step is to choose how many and which type of feed mechanism you should purchase. Of course, industrial sewing machines that deliver numerous feed capabilities are expensive than those that produce less. Here are the main types of feed mechanisms.
- Drop Feed: Here, the feed mechanism lies below the machine’s sewing surface and this type of mechanism is probably the most common type of feed mechanism.
- Needle Feed: For this, the needle itself acts as the feed mechanism, which minimizes slippage and allows users to sew multiple layers of fabric at a time.
- Walking Foot: Here, the immobile presser foot is replaced with a foot that moves with the feed. This allows for easier performance on thick, spongy or cushioned materials.
- Puller Feed: Here, the machine grips and pulls straight-seemed material as it is sewn. It can be performed on large heavy-duty items such as canvas tents.
- Manual Feed: For this, you as the worker control the feed and you may decide to do delicate, personal work such as shoe repair, embroidery, and quilting. In fact, it is sometimes necessary to remove the feed dogs to obtain a manual feed on industrial sewing machines.
