NEPA Wahala? Here’s a List of Solar Panels in Nigeria for Constant Power Supply

Solar energy has been a viable alternative in the face of expensive power and epileptic supply.

Being able to deal with the cost of solar systems, once, and enjoy a lifespan of up to 30 years are qualities too appealing for any capable hands to ignore.

Both local and international companies have risen to the demands by making solar power kits of varying capacities for different purposes.

You can conclude, from the rising rate of adoption, that switching to solar energy has its numerous advantages. They  include the following:

  • Save cost: Nigerians who use prepaid meters or those in unmetered homes can tell the tale of crazy bills and extortion. Even if you are yet to switch fully to solar power, you save yourself a significant amount by supplementing your energy needs with it. You can use it for decades once you install it and add complimentary tools.
  • Consistent supply: Unfortunately, the tale of exorbitant costs for an inconsistent power supply is worrisome. The solar alternative ensures you can keep your power active after the conventional power cut.
  • Save on high-billed gadgets: Equipment like water heater and electric stoves that normally eats into your bill can be transferred to solar energy, leaving your meter to keep records of basic uses only.
  • DIY: Unlike conventional electricity which you can neither install nor fix yourself, you can install solar panels and other components yourself. And within minutes, your power is on.

What You Should Know About Solar Power Systems

Each solar system, also called PV or photovoltaic system, is made up of varying components that ensure its functionality. You’ll need the panel, mounting equipment, inverters, batteries, DC-AC converter, fuse box connection, and switches.

The most important of this is the panel, as every other component depends on the energy it (the panel) absorbs from sun’s rays to generate electricity.

The higher the number of solar cells spread over a large area the higher the possibility of generating enough power. Also, the more light that hits a cell the more electricity it produces. So, the size of a solar panel and its capacity for sunlight absorption determines the amount of power it can provide. This is often measured in watts.

Solar panels could also be made of monocrystalline or polycrystalline cells. Either of them helps to capture energy from the sun and turn it into electricity. Here’s the difference between the two:

Monocrystalline panels have cells that are composed of single crystals which make the electrons that generate the flow of electricity have more room to move. On the other hand, producers of polycrystalline panels melt many fragments of silicon together to form the wafers of the panel. This inhibits the free movement of the electrons. Because of this difference, monocrystalline panels are rated as being more efficient.

Capacities of most panels are indicated by AC (alternate circuit), while most pieces of home equipment use direct circuit (DC). To address this, most solar systems come with in-built AC-DC converters. And products information often include the DC equivalent to guide your purchase decisions.
